LAMP Ministries Information and Mission Statement

  • LAMP Ministries is a Catholic lay missionary association, comprised of people who serve among the materially poor, with a focus on evangelization.  LAMP Missionaries may be married couples, single men and women, as well as religious sisters and priests.

  • People who experience a call to become a LAMP missionary commit to being a missionary for at least one year, or preferably two years.  During this time, LAMP Missionaries are provided ongoing training and support to assist them in their work with materially poor parishes or homeless families.

  • LAMP Missionaries work to support and strengthen the faith commitment of the people and parishes they serve. As people begin to realize the extent of God's love for them, they begin to develop a better sense of themselves, which enables them to take responsible steps in improving their condition.

  • LAMP Missionaries carry out their mission primarily in the urban environment of the greater New York area; however, LAMP Ministries is now spreading to other areas of the country.

  • Materially poor parishes cannot afford full salaried personnel to reach out to the people in the community through home visits, working with youth, adult religious education, Scripture sharing groups, etc.  LAMP Missionaries may perform these any other types of service depending on the needs of the particular parish and the talents and desires of the LAMP Missionary.

  • In addition to working with materially poor parishes, LAMP Missionaries also work with the homeless. Two of the key elements in working with the homeless are the LAMP Missionary's faith and presence, which occurs both in homeless shelters and in the streets.

  • The homeless are provided with support through various types of activities. LAMP Missionaries may hold Scripture sharing groups in the shelter, connect families with the local parish, and give instructions for Baptisms. LAMP Missionaries have found that what is particularly important in working with the homeless is having personal sharing and prayer, as these sorts of activities often draw people closer to God.
